Video of Dr. Bernabe's patient (with Chris Gray, head of Hanford Physical Therapy) walking the next day after minimally invasive hip replacement surgery using the anterior approach.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE ANTERIOR APPROACH:
1. Is a special operating table needed by a surgeon to perform the approach?
--While some surgeons require the use of a special operating table to perform the anterior
approach, it is not necessary. Dr. Bernabe is proficient in performing this surgery
without a special hip exposure table. In fact, Dr. Bernabe has trained other surgeons how
to do the anterior approach without a special table at the Center for Clinical Science and
Research at Stanford Medical University. We have special tools and
instruments which allow Dr. Bernabe and other surgeons to do the anterior approach
using a regular operating table. Refer to the slide show --------------------------------->>>>
2. Is the anterior approach available to every patient needing hip surgery?
--While the anterior approach has been proven to benefit most patients, there are some patients
who are simply not suitable for it. Those that are particularly heavy, and those requiring hip
revision surgery are not good candidates for the anterior approach. The final decision on which
surgical approach to use is determined by Dr. Bernabe after discussing the risks and benefits
and with your overall safety and final outcome in mind.
3. Does Medicare and private insurance cover the cost of the approach?
--The anterior approach is simply just that: a surgical approach. The surgical cost is covered by
Medicare and most private insurance for the hip replacement surgery. The approach chosen
by the surgeon does not affect the insurance coverage. Whether it's the posterior, lateral,
or anterior approach, the hip replacement surgery is covered in most cases. Certain private
insurance may require prior authorization. The anterior approach is not considered an "expe-
rimental surgery", but rather a proven method of performing hip replacement worldwide
and used by thousands of surgeons.

Dr. Bernabe is the FIRST surgeon in Kings county to use Computer Assisted Navigation to perform joint replacements. Traditionally, orthopedic surgeons use "feel" to determine if the bone cuts made and the implant position are accurate during the surgical procedure. Enter "CAS" or "Computer Assisted Surgery"...
CAS addresses the issue of patient specific differences. Through the use of infrared cameras, fluoroscopic images, and specially designed sensors and software, a computer helps Dr. Bernabe achieve the most accurate alignment possible--within
1 degree and 1 millimeter of total accuracy. This level of precision is unprecedented, and is superior to the ability of even the most experienced surgeons in the field.
Armed with the most sophisticated tools available in orthopedics
today, Dr. Bernabe continues his tradition of delivering better
patient outcomes, faster recovery, and state of the art technology.
Ask Dr. Bernabe if CAS is right for you.
